Sales commission tracking is the process of computing, from written rules and recorded sales, what each rep or agent has earned, and showing it line by line in a statement they can check.
Agree the base and the timing before the rate; adjust on separate lines; get the statement accepted before paying.
What is sales commission tracking?
Sales commission tracking is the process of computing, from written rules and recorded sales, the commission each salesperson or agent has earned for a period, and of presenting it as a statement detailed enough for them to check every line.
For an employed rep, commission is usually one part of pay alongside a salary. For an independent agent it is often the whole of their income from you. In both cases the principle is the same: the person paid must be able to redo the calculation.
The complete guide Field sales management software: the complete guideThe rules to write down
| Rule | Options | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Commission base | Order signed, invoice issued, payment received | Which event makes a sale count |
| Rate | Flat rate, rate per product line, rate above target | One rate or several, and on which share of sales |
| Target | Annual, quarterly, monthly | The period over which it is measured |
| Adjustments | Credit notes, cancellations, unpaid invoices | Whether and when they reduce the base |
| Shared deals | Split between two people, or one owner | Who gets what when two people work an account |
| Timing | Monthly, quarterly | When the statement is issued and when it is paid |
A worked example
A fictional agent is paid on invoices issued. The rules: 8 per cent of invoiced sales up to a monthly target of €20,000, then 10 per cent on the part above it. Credit notes reduce the base in the month they are issued.
| Line | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Account 1 | €12,000 | Invoice |
| Account 2 | €7,500 | Invoice |
| Account 3 | €4,500 | Invoice |
| Account 2 | −€1,000 | Credit note (returned goods) |
| Commission base | €23,000 | €24,000 − €1,000 |
| Tranche | Calculation | Commission |
|---|---|---|
| Up to target | €20,000 × 8 per cent | €1,600 |
| Above target | (€23,000 − €20,000) × 10 per cent = €3,000 × 10 per cent | €300 |
| Total | €1,900 |
Agent, accounts and amounts are fictional.
Reading: with a single flat rate of 8 per cent, the same base would have paid €1,840. The difference of €60 comes only from the rate above target, and the statement shows exactly where.
The statement workflow in six steps
- Write the rules. Base (order, invoice or payment), rates, target, rate above target, product lines, timing.
- Import the base. Orders or invoices for the period, attached to accounts and to the rep or agent.
- Apply adjustments. Credit notes, cancellations, shared deals and unpaid invoices, each on its own line.
- Compute line by line. Each line shows its amount, rate and commission, so anyone can redo the sum.
- Send for review. The agent or rep checks the statement and accepts it or disputes a line.
- Pay and archive. Pay what was agreed and keep the signed statement with its lines.
Avoiding disputes
- Unwritten rules. A rule explained orally will be remembered differently by each side.
- A total without lines. A single figure cannot be checked, so it gets contested.
- Silent adjustments. A credit note netted off without its own line looks like an error.
- Changing the rules mid-period. Decide how deals already in progress are treated.
What SalesIro brings
The features relevant to this page, all taken from the public feature list (59 features, 3 of them marked “to be activated”):
- Commission rules per agent: base rate, target, rate above target, rate per product line;
- Choice of commission base: commission on signature, invoice or payment;
- Co-signed statements: every line detailed, the agent signs or disputes in the tool;
- File import: invoices imported from Excel or CSV;
- Annual and per-account targets: the target the rate depends on.
The same data can be queried from an AI assistant — Claude, ChatGPT, Le Chat or Perplexity — through the MCP server for AI assistants, with a key or an OAuth connection. A question such as “what commission is due to each agent this month, and which statements are disputed?” is answered from your own data, without an export. Every read is written to the access log, and access rules still apply: a rep's assistant only sees that rep's accounts.

Frequently asked questions
How do you track sales commissions?
Write the rules down, import the sales that form the base, apply adjustments on separate lines, compute each line, then have the rep or agent check and accept the statement before paying.
What is a commission statement?
A document listing, for a period, each sale that counts, its amount, the rate applied and the commission, plus adjustments such as credit notes, so the person paid can redo the sum.
Should commission be paid on orders, invoices or payments?
Each option is used. Paying on payment received removes the risk of unpaid invoices but delays income; the choice should be written in the agreement and applied consistently.
How is commission above target calculated?
Usually the higher rate applies only to the part of sales above the target, not to all sales; the statement should show the two tranches separately.
Statements the agent can check
In SalesIro, each agent has their own commission rules; statements are detailed line by line and the agent signs or disputes them in the tool.
